You search for your own service in your own city, and your business is nowhere in the map results. Your competitors show up, but you do not. This is one of the most common frustrations for local businesses, and in most cases it has a fixable cause. Below are the five reasons I see most often, plus a step by step plan to fix each one.
What the Map Pack Is and Why It Matters
The Map Pack is the block of three business listings with a map that Google shows at the top of local searches. On phones it often takes up the entire first screen. It earns a large share of clicks because it is the first thing people see. Ranking in the regular organic results below it is valuable, but the Map Pack is where most of the phone calls come from.
Reason 1: Wrong or Incomplete Categories
Google decides which businesses to show for a search based heavily on your Google Business Profile categories. If your primary category does not match what customers search for, Google simply will not show you. A business that installs patios but lists itself only as a general contractor may never appear for patio searches. Many profiles also leave secondary categories empty, which throws away free relevance. Make sure your primary category describes your main service exactly, then add every secondary category that genuinely applies to your work.
Reason 2: Weak Reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest Map Pack signals. Google looks at how many reviews you have, how recent they are, and what words customers use in them. A profile with a dozen old reviews will lose to a competitor with a steady stream of recent ones almost every time. The fix is a simple routine: ask every happy customer for a review, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review within a day. Businesses that do this consistently climb over time.
Reason 3: NAP Inconsistencies Across the Web
NAP stands for name, address, and phone number. Google cross checks this information across directories, data aggregators, and your own website. If your details appear differently in different places, Google loses confidence in your listing and your Map Pack visibility drops. Old suite numbers, disconnected phone lines, and outdated business names are the usual culprits. Cleaning these up is unglamorous work, but it is often the single biggest unlock for a struggling profile.
Reason 4: No Dedicated Location Pages
If you serve several towns or neighborhoods, one generic services page is not enough. Google needs to see dedicated pages that prove you work in each area, with real project details, local photos, and content written for that place. Thin pages that only swap the city name tend to get ignored, and in some cases they cause problems. Real location pages with genuine local proof are what move the needle.
Reason 5: The Proximity Reality
Here is the honest part. Google favors businesses that are physically close to the person searching. You cannot change your address, and no tactic overrides proximity completely. But proximity is only one of several signals. A well optimized profile with strong reviews and clean data regularly outranks closer competitors that neglect their listings. Do not let proximity become an excuse to skip the work.
A Step by Step Fix Plan
Work through these in order. Each step builds on the one before it.
- Audit your Google Business Profile: categories, services, photos, hours, and attributes. Fix everything incomplete.
- Clean your name, address, and phone data across the major directories and data aggregators.
- Start a review routine. Ask, make it easy, and respond to every review.
- Build one strong location page per service area with real local proof.
- Add LocalBusiness schema to your website so Google can read your business facts cleanly.
- Track your Map Pack rankings with a geo grid tool so you can see real movement instead of guessing.
Most businesses are missing from the Map Pack because of fixable basics, not because Google dislikes them. Work through the steps above in order and measure as you go.
